Legacy Mutual Insurance is built on a foundation that stretches back to 1885 — before North Dakota was even a state. What began as Walsh County Mutual Fire Insurance Company has grown and evolved through more than 130 years of serving the people of North Dakota. Today, we carry that same proud heritage forward under a new name: Legacy Mutual Insurance.
The name has changed, but our values have not. We still believe in personal service over 800 numbers, in knowing our customers by name, and in being there when it matters most. While we embrace the technologies that make us more efficient and responsive, we know that what truly sets us apart is our commitment to the communities we serve. That’s the legacy we carry — and the promise we keep.

Our History – Timeline
June 27, 1885 — Walsh County Mutual Fire Insurance Company was incorporated in a small town that was part of the Dakota Territory.
November 2, 1889 — North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted to the Union as the 39th and 40th states.
December 31, 1926 — The company grows its balance of funds on hand to $15,544 — an impressive achievement for the time.
1956 — The company arranges reinsurance through Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company of North Dakota, providing a critical safety net against large-scale losses.
1966 — The company has five agents, selling fire, wind, theft, and vandalism insurance across the region.
1976 — A period of unprecedented growth takes place, resulting in 14 agents collecting more than $76,000 in premiums.
1986 — The company expands its agent network to include agencies in Minto, Fordville, Lankin, Oslo, Devils Lake, and Adams, accruing over $1.4 million in insurance coverages.
2013 — A complete facility rebuild takes place, including major updates to equipment, software, and technology, cementing the company’s position among the largest mutuals in North Dakota.
2026 — Walsh County Mutual proudly becomes Legacy Mutual Insurance, honoring 140 years of service while looking boldly toward the future.
